Headaches occur in 40% of the adult UK population and acupuncture is a recommended treatment by NICE for headache management. This lecture will describe headache pathology and provide an overview of patient examination and management. The identification of red flags is emphasised with the use of the SNOOP pneumonic, and classification of headaches into migraine, cluster, and tension types is addressed. Research evidence of the effectiveness of acupuncture in the management of headaches is reviewed. Selection of points based on western medical and traditional Chinese models is considered, and point usage described. Incorporation of acupuncture into physiotherapy treatment is highlighted.
